Poor Man Lazrus: Jester Hairston lyrics

“Poor Man Lazrus? (Hairston)
(based on Luke 16:19-31)
Poor man Lazrus sick and disabled. Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, 'cause I'm tormented in the flame. He had to eat crumbs from the rich man's table. Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, ‘cause I'm tormented in the flame.

Chorus:
I'm tormented in the flame. I'm tormented in the flame.
Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue,
'cause I'm tormented in the flame.

Rich man Divies he lived so well. Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, 'cause I'm tormented in the flame. And when he died he went straight to hell. Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, 'cause I'm tormented in the flame. (Chorus)

I love to shout, I love to sing! Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, 'cause I'm tormented in the flame.

I love to praise my heav'nly King! Dip your finger in the water, come and, cool my tongue, 'cause I'm tormented in the flame. (Chorus)

In the 70's I learned this song in choir in a public high school.hopefully maybe there will be a sea change back toward religious music in school.I have never forgotten the song.

In 1964, I sang this song with our school choir at competition at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. I have never forgotten it! We also sang Go Tell It On The Mountain, all the versus. Recently, I learned of the significance of both these songs to our black brother and sisters by researching Fisk University. May God bless those that have brought these songs into our lives.

this song is pretty good.. even tho i have never heard it on a cd just by singing it in choir, it seems like a good song for 14-18 yr old students to sing. it has a good rithum to it..
