Sleep lyrics

The evening hangs beneath the moon
A silver thread on darkened dune
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon
Upon my pillow, safe in bed
A thousand pictures fill my head
I cannot sleep my minds a flight
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
If there are noises in the night
A freighting shadow, flickering light
Then I surrender unto sleep
Where clouds of dreams give second sight
What dreams may come both dark and deep
Of flying wings and soaring leap
As I surrender unto sleep
As I surrender unto sleep

The author of the poem is a friend of Eric Whitacre and Whitacre had asked him to write lyrics to the music he had made. The author them watched his three year old son fall to sleep one night for inspiration to write what is now Sleep. It isn't really sad at all just a poem of a child being able to relax and feel safe.

it sounds like its the perspective of one dying. at the end, i think of the dying person breathing every time they sing 'sleep'
