We walked into town like sister and brother
She wore my hand-me-downs I wore a pair of her jeans
Very soon I was accosted by one of her ex-lovers
He said, "I want what's mine". I said, "Take her"
He said, "I meant those jeans!"

She was making eyes at another
She tells a modicum of lies
She refers to me as her brother
And sometimes I think she takes me along just for the ride

She said if she was a painter she'd paint me but I'd be no masterpiece
She doesn't want to be tied down and I could take it or leave it
We might live in the same town but we don't live in the same world
That explains why when she sees me she needs a local anaesthetic

She won't take your opinions
She says she's got more pride
She said, "Stick 'em in a museum!"
And sometimes I think she takes me along just for the ride

This must be the tenth night in a row
I've taken her out then driven her home
When conversation dies Nothing will arise

I'm just a sympathetic ear for all the claims she makes
While she scours the fields for her four-leafes clover
