I was about to say this must be one of those songs where it all depends on how you listen to it and the lyrics sound right, kind of like the melvins, but don't mess with this if you don't know the lyrics, it's one of my favorites so fix it

I love this song too.I thought this song was in reference to that picture of footprints on the beach during one's life. The caption usually says something like, "God, when there was trouble in my life there were only 1 set of footprints, where were you?" God responds with something like, "I was carrying you". That's what I thought this song was in reference to, but if it is, then by Kiedis saying that "you don't form in the wet sand...I do" is saying that he's God/Jesus. A lot of biblical references in this song.
