Do What You Have To Do lyrics

What ravages of spirit
Conjured this temptuous rage
Created you a monster
Broken by the rules of love
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do ...
And I have the sense to recognize that
I dont know how to let you go
Every moment marked
With apparitions of your soul
Im ever swiftly moving
Trying to escape this desire
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
But I have the sense to recognize
That I dont k
now how
To let you go
I dont know how
To let you go
A glowing ember
Burning hot
Burning slow
Deep within Im shaken by the violence
Of existing for only you
I know I cant be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I cant be with you
I do what I have to do
And I have sense to recognize but
I dont know how to let you go
I dont know how to let you go
I dont know how to let you go

I recently lost my mother to a monster of a disease..so the "Created you a monster.." and Deep within I'm shaken by the violence" has another meaning...to me.
Its been two months Mom..and this song rings so true.."The yearning to be near you..I dont know how to let you go..."
    I love you so much.
Sending Hugs and Kisses to Heaven

"Created you a monster..." refers to what one becomes once drug addiction takes him or her.
"Deep within I'm shaken by the violence"
That phrase is often revealed by heroin addicts trying to recover and going through withdrawals.

This is a tremendous song. I have been through what she is singing about. I can not believe that someone who hasn't could write this song, but then there is also 'I will remember you' and so many more. Having no artist ability at all, I am astounded by people who can see things so clearly only in their mind and then express it in a way that deeply touches those that have experienced it. Sarah is a true artist and this song is remarkable

I stand (very happily) corrected. Thank you Smith00.

    Cathi,

Temptuous is certainly a word. It is an abbreviated form of tempestuous.

    The first line:
    "What ravages of spirit
    Conjured this temptuous rage"

What do you think that means? "Temptuous" it's not really a word but I really like it.
    Any therories? Anyone?

I have always taken the song to mean: I love you but I know we can't be together (either because one of us is already with someone or because the other person doesn't have the same feelings) but I can't get over you. My heart is still yours all the same. I wish I didn't feel this way, but I do.

i dance to this song and i don't think people really understand until they listen to the words. I am 11 and people say i am to young to dance to this song but if they would listen to the words it tells a story of how someone has lost a family member or close friend and is angry and frustrated until they realize that they have to let them go and move on and that it is ok. So yeah i know what i am doing!

This is such a powerful song, and I haven't been though it, but it's so clear once you get it what every word means. I love how in the last refrain she uses the word "but" - "And I have sense to recognize, but" instead of "that". One word, and yet such a brilliant use that shows her feelings about how she wants to let go, but can't.

I completly agree. This is such a very moving, song. Exspecially, if you have been in this situation. The wonderful part about this song, is that it can inturperated in many ways. That is the beauty, that's is why it touches so many people's lives. It is one of my favorite songs from her album.

Some people will not understand this song. Once you've been through a situation like the song is speaking of, you so get it. Then you can appreciate the depth of it.
