Read My Mind lyrics

On the corner of Main Street
Just tryin' to keep it on line
You say you wanna move on and
You say I'm falling behind
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

I never really gave up on
Breakin' out of this two-star town
I got the green light, I got a little fight
I'm gonna turn this thing around
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

Good old days, the honest man
The restless heart of Promised Land
A subtle kiss that no one sees
A broken wrist and a big trapeze

Woah I don't mind, you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?

It's funny how you just break down
Waiting on some sign
I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soaking my spine
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

Teenage queen, the loaded gun
The drop dead dream, the Chosen One
A southern drawl, the world unseen
A city wall and a trampoline

Woah I don't mind, you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Before you jump tell me what you find
When you read my mind

Slipping in my faith until I fall
He never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don't let it sting
I wanna breathe that fire again

She said I don't mind, you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Put your back on me
Put your back on me
Put your back on me

The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds
Cut out of the sun
When you read my mind

    the chorus is the best

"I pull up to the front of your driveway
    with magic soaking my spine"

I think that line explains that the song is really just a jumbled description of an acid trip. The kid singing the song is wondering if the person he is with can "read his mind" and see the same crazy images that he sees. I think him and a girlfriend are tripping walking through their town and he has to stop because the drug has him freaking out. His girlfriend is trying to get him to keep moving.

hmm i've found these ideas about the lyrics very interesting. definetly think its about a break up and leaving the two star town..but also i get the idea of the girl saying it all to the boy wanting to leave and the boy telling her he's already thought it all before her...he was already about to break up with her too hence the can you read my mind?

i love the last bit.. The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun..it's very pretty

I agree with Brandon, cause I'm going to a gifted high school next year and will be moving out of my town. For me, the "green light" was the acceptance letter. "A city wall" surrounds my neighborhood. And when I was little I had a trampoline. I'll be leaving a special friend behind this summer. He's going to be out of the country for the summer and will come back a few days before school. I plan to visit him then...I wonder what it will be like?

Actually, who cares what the song is about. I just found out Flowers is a republican. Well...i guess that ruined it!!

"I don't mind if you don't mind, cus I don't shine if you don't shine."
-I think the song is about a relationship, he loves this woman, but they are having problems. They grew up together. She was the "teenage queen" and he was the sucidal teenager that she helped. She is upset with him because he wants to move on to other experiences in life. Now she is the one who is suicidal.

Moving out of Mormon Utah sounds correct given the "two star town" line. the green light just means he can go, and a little fight is similar to a common symbolic phrase all of you probably used once in your life: "we can win this game still, we have some fight left in us" or something like that. The two stanzas that are not chorus mention many juxtaposing elements. We can imagine the honest man and the rest of the first stanza resembling his home in Utah (or a different era) and the second line, with completely opposite examples, symbolizing Las Vegas.

You have to have experienced what Brandon is writing about to understand.
Theres a guy looking back to before he experienced what the world has to offer and realising what a small town he came from (2 star town) and how weird it is going back.He left a special friend behind but later goes back to see her but they're struggling - 'put your back on me'. Its about trying to break free, the green light when you've MADE IT out.
The broken wrist, the trampoline-small things he left behind that maybe mattered to him once. Can you read his mind?

I love this song so much.
The first time I heard it I cried.
It’s a about Leaving the small town that you hate and moving forward which sometimes is a hard thing to do.
Its a very simple but moving song.
    Very inspiring I love it!

i agree wtih Nibs way up there. i think it really just is about getting the hell out of a crappy place. it's about busting free and seeing the rest of the world and having someone to share it with.

omg!! i love this song!! its the best and the killers rock they are soo good its not even funnie! yep and brandon flowers is sooooo hot!!!!!! woot woot!

This song is totally about Brandon Flowers and leaving Utah behind ... there are all sorts of references (and Mormon buzz words) to him growing up as a Mormon and the common feelings of Mormon youth who deal with the same conflicts of faith. His lyrics sort of remind me of Bono's ... believing but "still haven't found what he's looking for " ... which video by the way was filmed in Vegas back in 1987.

I think the killers rule, they are very unique and have catchie tunes, music rocks, their concerts rock, and the videos they have done are super cool and interesting. All the lyrics and the fun in the video seem related somehow. The song rules simple because people like it and it has sparked lots of interest in what it really means, like in life, and art it is all in the eyes, or in this case the ears of the beholder. Rock on and listen to their previous album. I find it rare to dig deeper into some bands albums due to limited good content, but this band has it. Rock on.

I agree with Nids, for me the songs is so beautiful an one of the best singles of the disc.

  • kzgzls 0 points

I agree with the comments of Nibs and Jenko. The heart of the song is about breaking out of a dead end town. The lyrics are at least partially autobiographical and refer to Brandon leaving the small Utah town of Nephi at the age of 16 to live in Las Vegas.

Such a class song, i agree, i feel its about escaping the 2 star town and wants to join a girl in leaving, but only wants to leave if she does to, the references are about them jumping over the fears of leaving freinds and family, he wants to leave badly but he cant if he has to leave her behind and the memories of his first love.

  • Nibs 0 points

This is not a song about suicide, it's simply a song about getting out of a small town and moving on. The trampoline is just a method by which they jump a "city wall" to make the escape. The green light is a traffic light, meaning "go." The girl already plans to leave; she's decided she needs to move on. The guy is just saying that he's been wanting to go, too, and that he never gave up on his dream of leaving. In a nutshell, he's just telling her to wait for him and that they can go together, because they both are thinking the same thing - get out and see the world.

  • Dani 0 points

I think that guy #1 loves the girl, but is afraid to tell her, because of what her reaction might be, and also that she is with guy #2...but guy #1 can see that guy #2 doesnt really love her!! N that secretly she knows it too. I think "woman open the door" is guy #1 saying to her: let me into your life, and "put your back on me" is hime saying: lean on me, i will be there for you now. Also, i think the green light is refering to him getting an approval or "go ahead" for something...not quite sure what tho!! Or even inspiration from something? :S :P xxx

    great song

    прикольна? пе?н?!

  • Luke 0 points

I think it's about guy #1 who loves this girl. But she loves guy #2. guy #2 doesn't love her, so she wants to die. Guy #1 will die if she dies
-The green light might be symbolic of love
    like from The Great Gatsby

I THINK 'PUT YOUR BACK ON ME' MEANS BACK ME UP ON THIS ONE , SUCH AS COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET

  • daisy 0 points

Can't figure out what "put your back on me" means? Anyone? He does say it 3 times, so it must be at the heart of the meaning surely.

This is Brandon Flowers favourite song, and it's one of mine. The killers music is just so different from the rest i love them !!!THEY ROCK!!!

  • D 0 points

My take is on the girl is breaking up with the dude, and he's trying to win her over, which he does. At least that what I see in it, no suicide, no coming out of the closet wth did you guys get that?

IMHO the best single in the album and it’s a great album all around

  • Jin 0 points

    I agree with Billy ..
The song is beautiful! One of th best singles on the new album ! x

what a class tune, i dont care what the words mean! Best song of 2006 in my eyes! The only problem i have, there are quite a lot of words to rememeber. I spend most the time mumbling them - cos i dont know them - yet!!

    Great song.

  • Rebecca 0 points

This is my most favorite song. Here is what my husband and I got from it. He loves this girl very much, and she dumps him, because like most men, they can't read a womans mind even though us women would like to think if they can. To get back at her, he commits suicide on her trampoline, so when she opens the door, (Before you Jump, tell me what you find) she will see him dead on the trampoline and there he will she will be able to feel the sting(Pain) that she caused him. That's what we got. It is such a deep and amazing song!

  • bill 0 points

    O.K. SO THERE'S A BREAK-UP, OBVIOUSLY.
THE LOADED GUN, A WORLD UNSEEN, THE TRAMPOLINE- JUMPING INTO DEATH (SUICIDE?)
I THINK THE SECOND TIME SAYS 'BEFORE YOU JUMP' NOT 'BEFORE YOU GO'
'I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE' MEANS I DON'T JUMP IF YOU DON'T JUMP(?)
'SLIPPIN' IN MY FAITH UNTIL I FALL'
'WOMAN OPEN THE DOOR, DON'T LET IT STAY'
HE'S TRYING TO TALK HER OUT OF SUICIDE, BUT HE'S GOING IF SHE'S GOING

    ANY THOUGHTS?
