Casta Diva lyrics

Norma is set in ancient Gaul at the time of the Roman occupation. Devotees of the Druid high priestess Norma have assembled to witness her performing the sacred rite of cutting the mistletoe. She does so, then in the aria of 'Casta diva' invokes the moon goddess, calling upon her to spread on earth the peace she causes to reign in heaven.

NORMA AND PRIESTESSES

Chaste godess, who dost bathe in silver
these ancient, hallowed trees,
turn thy beutiful face upon us,
unveiled and unclouded ...
Temper thou the burning hearts
the excessive zeal of thy people.
Enfold the earth in that sweet peace
which, through thee, reigns in heaven.
