Julia Belle lyrics
JULIA BELLE sung by Dale Ann Bradley written by Chris Stuart
(intro – verse)
VERSE
B
Julia Swain is my name, but they call me Julia Belle.
I’m a Mississippi steamboat and I know that river well.
Decks are dry, buckets clean, with feathers on my stacks
I’m steaming to Galena, but you know I’m coming back.
CHORUS
You-know I’m coming back, you know I’ll be back
Fair ye well I’m Julia Belle, and you know I’m coming back.
(break-chorus)
I was born on a river bank on the ol’ Iowa shore
But I’ll carry anyone who’ll pay to come aboard.
I’ve been north I’ve been south, I’ve been ‘round this world.
But some day I’ll drift away, no more a working girl.
No-more a working girl, no more a working girl
Fair ye well I’m Julia Belle, no more a working girl.
(Break – verse and chorus)
Johnny get your banjo out, get your fiddle too,
And let’s hope my calliope can play along in tune.
The river’s high, the night is still, the moon is hangin’ low
Here’s a toast to all the crew and here’s to Captain Trone
Here’s to Captain Trone, here’s to Cap’n Trone
Fair ye well I’m Julia Belle, here’s to Captain Trone
(Break – verse and chorus)
You know I’m coming back, you know I’ll be back
Fair ye well I’m Julia Belle, and you know I’m coming back.
(Break – chorus x2)

A great lively song. Loved it. Since I play guitar and the harmonica in a blue grass group, I changed the wording for the line
" and let's hope my calliope", to, "lets hope my old blues harp" . It works for me and I can't wait to sing and play it at the next set practice. thank you Bob Bennett
