Malone Lyrics Follow

Malone is a family name. From the Irish "Mael Eòin", the name means a servant or a disciple of Saint John*.
The explanation provided simplifies the meaning of the name to its most base form and provides only one translation, whereas, there are several possibilities. The most immediate flaw in this singular translation is to assume that the first portion, "Maol" , means servant or disciple of a Saint. For, if that were the case, it would follow that names like "Maolduin" (Muldoon) would be servant or follower of St. Doon As there is no St. Doon, or anything like it, how can this disparity be explained? Certainly, names such as Mulrooney and Mulholland receive a similar treatment, to that of "Maol Eoin", but that does not mean they are correct. Maolduin, translated from Gaelic into English, means fort (dun) on a thin, bald, or barren area of land. It does not mean servant of St. Fort. If there is even one such disparity (and there are more) that go against the servant/disciple translation then questions must arise. One only has to translate the location "Mull of Kintyre", made famous by Paul McCartney (of the Beatles), back to its Gaelic origin for further evidence; Maol Ceann Tir. Maol means thin or bald or barren, Ceann means head, and Tir means land. QED; Bald headland (Photographs of the headland are readily available online). However, if we remain with the translation provided, then Mull of Kintyre should translate to "devotee or disciple of St. Headland". Clearly, "Maol" refers to a physical aspect of the landscape. However, over time, it became more prudent to associate names with the growing power of the Church. Thus arises the explanation that "Maol" refers to the sparse practice of monks shaving their heads, or in other words being bald. All well and good but if there is no St. Headland, or St. Fort some suspicion must fall on the given mistranslation and consequent misinterpretation of the Malone name.<N. Malone, 2018>
