The duduk (doo-dook; Armenian: դուդուկ, traditionally known as ծիրանափող, tsiranapogh), is a woodwind instrument indigenous to Armenia. Unlike other double reed instruments, such as the oboe or shawm, the duduk has a very large reed in proportion to its size. The unflattened reed and completely cylindrical (not conical) body of the instrument produce a sound closer to that of a clarinet or saxophone than to more commonly known double-reeds.
UNESCO proclaimed the Armenian duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and inscribed it in 2008. The duduk music has been used in a number of films, most notably in Gladiator.
Variations of it exist in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, including the balaban in Azerbaijan and Iran.
