Ice Cream Days - Jennifer Hall lyrics

Down to the village shop
The wind is high
It's rushing through the trees
We kicked the puddles
Scuffed our shoes
A shilling in each pocket
For liquorice and chews

Down from the high hilltop
Sliding down the banks
We tumbled as we flew
Swam in the streams
And made clay pots
Got our clothes from jumble sales
We wouldn't wear anything new
Oh that would never do

Tanya, I've never had a friend like you
We shared everything
We talked and laughed and grew
Tanya, I've never had a friend like you
Jokes on everyone
And no one could stop us
Doing what we wanted to
God I miss you

Yesterday I called you up
I wanted to know
Did you remember me
But your laugh is gone
Someone has cut you down
Now you're trying to find your way
To safer ground
Go now before you drown

Remember the ice cream days
Whistle to the wind
And blow away the night
With a penny in your pocket
You can go to the shop
Give your smile to the lady
And steal everything she's got
The sky's the limit when you break the lock

Tanya, I've never had a friend like you
We shared everything
We talked and laughed and grew
Tanya, I've never had a friend like you
Jokes on everyone
And no one could stop us
Doing what we wanted to
God I miss you

Whistle to the wind
And bring your roller skates too
(You can find your silver wings)
(Go put on your silver wings)

I remember this song from the movie "Bright Lights, Big City"and never forgot this song even after I lost all my hearing. I have spent years scouring the nets for the lyrics for this song. Alas! Someone was so kind to post this! Thanks so much!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! I have been lookin for this song for the past 10 years! I can't begin to explain the anguished teenage obsession that this sing defined for me, or the exact moment I heard that me then true love was less than "in love" as I...after 3 days of radio silence I realised the cruelty of my unreciprocated adoration..pathetic but romantic teenage passion nonetheless...it was BEAUTIFUL....

This song is my alltime favourite. It reminds me of a friend with whom I also shared a lot and laughed and joked and grew up with. Unfortunately like Tanya in the song she has also been brought down. Her marriage has broken up and her children is not with her. I also tried to call her one day but all she did was cry and said she would contact me again but she never did. I have now lost contact with her.
