Because You're You lyrics
BECAUSE YOU'RE YOU
Music: Victor Herbert
Lyrics: Henry Blossom
Love is a queer little elfin sprite,
Blest with the deadliest aim!
Shooting his arrows to left and right,
Bagging the rarest game.
Filling our hearts with a glad surprise,
Almost too good to be true!
And still can you tell me why do you love me?
Only because you are you, dear!
Refrain
Not that you are (I am) fair, dear,
Not you are (I am) tru.
Not your (my) golden hair, dear,
Not your (my) eyes of blue.
When we ask the reason,
Words are all to few!
So I know I love you, dear, because your're you.

My father used to sing this to my mother when they were courting--prior to their wedding November 19, 1938. Dad died October 3, 1980, and Mom March 5, 2001...but when ever I think of them, I think of this song.... but Dad used to sing it "Not that you are pretty, not that you are true, not your golden hair, dear, not your eyes of blue. Should you ask the reason, words are all too few--for you know I love you, dear, because you're you!!!" We five kids would giggle and hug.... love is sumpin.....

I'm 63. My parents used to have nice voices when they were younger. They used to harmonize this song when we'd be on long car drives. I have the nicest memories of it. We found and bought "The Red Mill" six years ago, and played this song from it at my mother's 80th birthday party. A very sweet and happy song for me. I'm amazed to learn that it is 106 years old!
